Mobile Unit Snapshot: MU-24 – A Compact, Capable Broadcast Truck

MU-24: A Compact, Capable Broadcast Truck Built for Speed, Agility, and Full-Scale Performance

In today’s broadcast landscape, production teams are being asked to do more with less—less space, less setup time, and leaner crews. That’s where the MU-24 shines. Built by Live Media to address the evolving demands of regional broadcasts, mid-size live events, remote studios, and fast-paced field production, the MU-24 packs full broadcast-grade capabilities into a compact, single-expando format.

Measuring just 40 feet in length and expanding to a 48-foot operational bay, this mobile unit delivers a comprehensive toolset: multi-M/E switching, multi-camera acquisition, EVS replay, integrated routing, audio mixing, comms, and full signal transport. Whether you’re capturing a regional sporting event, streaming a corporate town hall, running a mobile news studio, or supporting a worship broadcast, MU-24 gives you big performance without a big footprint.

The truck’s compact design is matched with smart power infrastructure—a 3-phase, 208V setup drawing 150 amps, with no neutral required. The 150-foot feeder cable and Camlock connectors support flexible venue integration, allowing crews to get powered up quickly in urban, campus, or stadium environments.

At the heart of MU-24 is a Grass Valley K-Frame production switcher with a Kayenne 4-stripe, 35-button panel. Despite the unit’s compact form factor, the switcher supports 5 mix effects (M/E), 64 video inputs, and 32 outputs, enabling full-scale production for multi-camera shows. Features like FlexiKey™, Double Take, and full chroma keying give TDs the creative control needed for dynamic transitions, graphics layering, and live compositing. The system includes six internal DPMs and one external DPM, along with an image store for clip playback—ensuring MU-24 can deliver clean, network-quality content with minimal gear and crew.

MU-24 is also built for live replay, with a fully integrated EVS environment. The truck includes two EVS XT3 6-channel LSM servers, an EVS XS 4-channel spotbox with a Lance controller, and both an X-File3 and X-Hub for high-speed file transfer and media sharing. It’s configured to support three 10-channel replay positions and one 4-channel spotbox, giving sports, entertainment, and studio producers the instant playback and ISO ingest functionality they need for live event workflows.

Signal management is handled via a Grass Valley NVision 3G router, built around a 144×288 video matrix. With 32×32 embedding and de-embedding capabilities, the router ensures reliable audio-video signal alignment across multichannel workflows. The truck includes 16 AJA frame syncs and cross-converters for standards compliance and signal matching. Its multiview system supports 160 sources across 28 viewing windows—giving directors and engineers the confidence to manage all live and recorded feeds in real time. For tally integration, MU-24 includes a TSL TallyMan interface to manage camera and operator signaling.

On the acquisition side, MU-24 includes eight Grass Valley LDX80 Premiere cameras and six LDK4426 fiber triax converters, providing flexibility for long cable runs and efficient camera deployment. The unit also includes five Super XPander camera adapters with 7” viewfinders, giving operators full shoulder or pedestal support in the field. Its Fujinon lens kit features five 77×9.5 HD long-zoom field lenses, three 22x ENG lenses, one 17x ENG lens, and a 1x wide-angle lens—enabling coverage for everything from tight action shots to sweeping audience or stage views. MU-24 is wired for up to 10 camera control units (CCUs), delivering full paint and iris control for consistent, high-quality images.

Audio operations are driven by a Calrec Artemis Light digital console, offering 40 faders, 240 DSP inputs, and an extensive I/O suite that includes 64×64 analog, 128×128 AES digital, and 128×128 MADI routing. With built-in support for multichannel audio capture, routing, and live mixing, the Artemis console makes MU-24 a reliable hub for live concerts, spoken word, or fully immersive stereo broadcasts.

Communication is also robust. MU-24 comes equipped with a RTS ADAM intercom system, configured as an 80×80 matrix with support for 16 RVON channels, 12 powered PL channels, and 8 powered IFB outputs. RTS belt packs, IFB boxes, and Beyer headsets are included to keep the entire crew connected, whether on set, in the booth, or managing remote audio/video capture.

To support announcers and AV operators, MU-24 includes a thoughtful selection of gear: HMD26 announcer headsets, Studio Tech boxes, MD46 stick microphones, MKH416 shotguns, MKH807 long-range microphones, MKH418 stereo mics, and a variety of SDI field monitors for on-site control. LED light kits are available for quick booth or talent setups when ambient lighting falls short.

Despite its smaller size, MU-24 includes a comprehensive cabling infrastructure: 7000 feet of triax for camera connectivity, 4000 feet of DT12 audio multicore, a 1000-foot TAC-12 fiber run, and a 500-foot TAC-4 run—providing the signal distribution backbone for professional setups that span multiple venues, rooms, or stages.

Why MU-24 Is the Right Fit for Regional and Agile Broadcasts

The MU-24 shines in applications where full broadcast capability is required but space, time, or logistics are limited. Its single-expando design allows for rapid setup and teardown, making it ideal for regional sports broadcasts, corporate meetings, worship services, concerts, and town halls. It also functions beautifully as a flypack companion or standalone control room for live streaming productions, virtual events, or temporary studio builds.

Its smart layout, flexible power system, and proven GV + EVS + Calrec core make it a trusted tool for broadcast teams who need rock-solid signal integrity, multi-format support, and mission-ready agility. It’s smaller than flagship OB trucks but delivers where it counts—with broadcast-grade signal paths, multichannel replay, and UHD-ready camera systems, all in a right-sized form factor.
