Mobile Unit Snapshot: MU-10 53’ Single Expando Production Truck

The MU-10 53’ Single Expando Production Truck is a state-of-the-art mobile facility engineered to deliver broadcast-quality video and audio production for large-scale live events, national broadcasts, and sophisticated studio productions. Operated by Live Media, a division of Live Media Group, MU-10 brings together the highest-grade switching, recording, routing, and camera systems to ensure professional-grade quality in even the most demanding environments. Designed for scalability, flexibility, and reliability, MU-10 serves as a fully capable control room on wheels, supporting multi-camera workflows and complex live production needs with ease.

Measuring 54 feet in length and stretching to 79 feet overall with its tractor, MU-10 provides a rugged, expandable setup that maximizes workspace without compromising mobility. Its road width of 8.5 feet extends to 12.5 feet when deployed, and with a gross vehicle weight of 80,000 pounds, it creates a stable environment where production teams can operate with precision. The expansion extends 32 feet in length and 4 feet in width, creating an efficient, ergonomic workspace built for seamless collaboration across video, audio, replay, and transmission teams.

The heart of MU-10’s video production power lies in its Grass Valley Kayenne Classic Switcher, which features a Kayenne 4-stripe, 35-button panel and delivers 4.5 M/E capabilities. With 75 inputs and 48 outputs, FlexiKey functionality, Double Take mode, advanced chroma keying, and multiple DPM effects engines, the switcher is designed to handle complex, multilayered productions with ease. Recording and playback operations are supported by a fleet of EVS servers, including three XT3 6-channel LSM servers, an XT3 4-channel replay-only server, and an XS 4-channel spotbox controlled via Lance Controller. An EVS X-file3 transfer server and an X-hub3 media sharing hub provide fast file transfers and centralized content management, with the truck wired to support up to five 6-channel EVS units and three 4-channel EVS units simultaneously.

Routing infrastructure is equally robust, with a 288×512 Grass Valley Trinix video router and a 256×256 Concerto audio router ensuring seamless signal distribution throughout the truck. Embedding and de-embedding are handled through a 32×32 matrix, while the system includes sixteen fiber I/O ports for external connectivity. Thirty For-A up/down/cross frame synchronizers with color correction capabilities and three transmission processors provide essential format conversions and fine-tuning for live workflows. With 228 multiviewer windows available across operations, MU-10 offers production teams unmatched situational awareness and flexibility.

Camera acquisition is powered by ten Grass Valley LDX 82 Triax Elite cameras, supported by six Grass Valley LDK Super XPanders with seven-inch viewfinders and six LDK4426 fiber triax converters for maximum transmission versatility. The lens package includes a Fujinon 101×8.9 HD lens with stabilizer, three 88×8.8 HD stabilized lenses, two 72×9.3 HD lenses, two 22×7.8 servo zoom lenses, two 18×5.5 hybrid wide-angle lenses, and one 13×4.5 wide-angle lens, ensuring comprehensive coverage from long-range telephoto shots to wide-field captures. Cameras are mounted on a combination of Vinten Vector 750H pan heads and Cartoni Gamma tripods, and the truck is wired to support up to fourteen camera control units, providing plenty of room for scalable operations.

Audio production inside MU-10 is managed through a Calrec Artemis Lite console featuring Bluefin 2 technology and Concord automation. With 56 faders and extensive I/O capacity, including 96×96 analog, 96×100 AES, 192×192 MADI, and 64×64 Dante channels, the console delivers pristine audio mixing and routing for even the most complex productions. Integrated Waves Broadcast Suite support ensures access to powerful digital signal processing tools for broadcast-standard mixes.

For internal and external communication, MU-10 is equipped with a 128×128 RTS Adam Matrix intercom system, offering 16 Rvon IP channels, 8 powered party line channels, and 6 powered IFB channels. Sixteen dual-listen BP325 beltpacks and eight IFB 4030 boxes, along with a robust inventory of headsets and telephone interfaces, ensure that every team member remains connected and in sync throughout production.

MU-10 also includes a comprehensive A/V support inventory, including HMD26 announcer headsets, Studio Tech announcer boxes, Sennheiser MD46 stick microphones, and a range of Sennheiser MKH shotgun and stereo microphones for high-quality field and booth audio capture. The truck carries portable SDI monitors, LED light kits, and a broad cable inventory featuring triax, SMPTE fiber, DT12 multicables, XLR, coaxial, and single-mode fiber runs, providing complete infrastructure for even the most complex production layouts.

What truly makes MU-10 stand out is its focus on resilience and scalability. Featuring redundant signal paths, fully integrated multiviewing, advanced communications, and a camera system capable of adapting to a wide range of live environments, MU-10 is an indispensable solution for network sports broadcasts, major concert tours, award shows, large-scale corporate events, and even religious and live-streaming productions. Every component, from switchers to servers to cameras, has been selected to provide maximum flexibility and performance, enabling production teams to create unforgettable content in any setting.
